SYNOPSIS
A hole in the ground can be an entrance to another time or a passage through which water disappears. Above ground, human desires reshape Jeju Island's volcanic landscape, while the history of massacres remains buried beneath the changing terrain. Water moves with a past that has yet to arrive.
DIRECTOR’S NOTE
This film began with a question: How can we continue to live and make images while carrying the weight of war, ecological collapse, unresolved histories, and erased grief? Living on Jeju Island, I have come to sense how military strategies, tourism development, and silenced memories flow like groundwater beneath seemingly peaceful landscapes. Rather than explaining these contradictions, this film is an attempt to listen to them.
At its center is a female figure whose identity remains unfixed. She is both a witness and a listener, at times disappearing into the landscape. The bodies of women who once drew water, and of those who hid in caves during the Jeju April 3 massacres, are not reenacted but return as breath and vibration. The film asks whether memories that have seeped into the earth like underground water might persist, return, and become a form of resistance.

시놉시스
땅에 난 구멍은 다른 시간으로 들어가는 입구이거나 물이 사라지는 통로일 수 있다. 영화 속 인물들은 지하의 물길을 따라 제주도를 떠돌며 땅에 난 구멍을 찾고 그 아래에 있는 것에 귀를 기울인다. 지상에서는 인간의 욕망이 끊임없이 화산 지형을 바꾸어 놓는 한편, 학살의 역사는 변화하는 땅 아래 여전히 묻혀 있다. 지상과 지하를 넘나드는 물은 아직 도래하지 않은 과거의 흔적을 실어 나른다.
연출의도
이 영화는 ‘전쟁과 생태 붕괴, 해결되지 않은 역사와 소거된 슬픔을 안은 채, 어떻게 계속 살아가고, 이미지를 만들 수 있는가’ 라는 질문에서 시작되었다. 제주섬에 살며 나는 평온해 보이는 풍경 아래 군사전략과 관광 개발, 지워진 기억들이 지하수처럼 흐르고 있음을 체감했다. 이 작업은 그 모순을 설명하기보다 들어보려는 시도다.
그 중심에는 고정되지 않은 여성의 몸이 있다. 그는 기록자이자 청취자이며 때로는 풍경 속으로 사라진다. 물을 길었던 여성들, 4.3 당시 동굴에 숨었던 이들의 몸은 재현되지 않고, 숨결과 진동의 형태로 돌아온다. 이 영화는 땅 밑의 물처럼 스며든 기억이 사라지지 않고 다시 돌아와 저항이 될 수 있는지 묻고자 한다.
